Religion = Mental?

I wonder if the desires and deities of the world's religions reflect the processes of the human mind. Thus, religion is a projection, rather than something "out there."

I also wonder if some forms of religion reflect mental illness, like the desire of eternal torment for one's enemies, refusal to allow women to conduct important clerical duties, and xenophobia towards other religions.
